For more detailed control over the assigned topics and learning activities, you can create and assign study plans for individual students and class groups.
The study plan editor page can be found here: https://pathfinder.w3schools.com/admin/study-plans
This is where you can create and edit study plans:
Existing study plans will be displayed as rows in the table of this page.
Click the green ‘+’ button to add a new study plan. This will open a dialog box where you can enter the name and description of the study plan:
After the initial creation of a study plan, the basic information in that study plan can be edited using the context menu button on the far right hand side of the table row in the overview table:
This will open the dialog box again, where you can edit or update the details.
You can also make a copy of a study plan and delete a study plan from the context menu.
Once a study plan is created you can click it to open the study plan editor page:
Here, you will find a calendar view where you can add learning activities to your study plan. You can add learning activities by either:
- Clicking a date/time slot in the calendar, which will open an event editor
- Dragging and dropping a learning activity from the right hand side panel
Once a learning activity is added as an event in the calendar, you can click the event to edit the event again.
You can switch between month, week, day and agenda views of the study plan to suit your needs.
Select a skill in the top of the right hand side panel to see a list of the available learning activities you can add from each skill/topic:
From this list you can choose to add the entire topic (listed on the top), entire modules, or individual learning activities like individual lessons, quizzes and code challenges.
In this example, the skill / topic selected is JavaScript. You can add the entire topic (containing the whole W3Schools JavaScript curriculum), by dragging and dropping the ‘JavaScript’ item from the right hand panel into the calendar:
Similarly, you can drag and drop a module (like in this example, ‘Introduction’):
And place it where you want in the calendar:
When a learning activity is added in the calendar, the corresponding item in the right hand panel will appear with gray text. Items that are not (yet) added will appear with black text.
By clicking on the event in the calendar, the event editor will open and you can further customize the details of this event:
From here, you can change the name, the start and end dates, the description, and add / remove learning activities from the list at the bottom of this editor.
The description will be visible to the students that are assigned this study plan, so you can use this description to relay extra information or instructions for the students.
Expand the modules to view or add / remove activities from the event you are editing:
Learning activities that have been added as events in the calendar can be freely moved to another date / time by dragging and dropping. You can also click, hold and drag the sides of an event to change the start / end dates:
For example, you can drag the right side of the event to make it span multiple days:
You can also achieve this by clicking on the event and changing the start and end times.
Multiple learning activities can be added for the same (or partially overlapping) time periods:
Learning activities from multiple topics can be added to the same study plan. Here, a few relevant lessons from the HTML and CSS curricula have been added as well:
Individual lessons and other learning activities (like quizzes and code challenges), can viewed and added to the study plan by expanding a module in the right hand panel:
When you done editing the study plan, you can publish your draft using the dropdown menu at the top:
In order to assign a study plan to a student or class group, you will need to publish the study plan first.
You can still edit and update a study plan after it has been published, and changes you make to a study plan that is already assigned to students / a class group will be updated for the students immediately.
When you have a published study plan that is ready to be assigned, you can assign it to either a whole class group, or individual students.
To assign a study plan to a class group, use the context menu in the right hand side of the class group row in the overview page:
This will open a dialog box where you can select which study plan you want to assign:
When you have selected one or more study plans from your list that you want to assign to this class group, click the ‘Assign Study Plans’ button:
To assign a study plan to one or more specific students in a class group: Enter the class group from the overview page, select the students by clicking the checkboxes on the left hand side of the student rows, and click the ‘Assign Study Plans’ button:
This will open a dialog box where you can select one or more study plans to assign to the selected students.
Then, select the study plan(s) you want to assign, and click the ‘Assign Plans’ button:
Once a study plan has been assigned to a class group or individual students, there will be an entry in the ‘Study Plan’ column of the student table in the classroom overview page:
This entry will have a progress visualization reflecting the student progress in the learning activities of the study plan.
You can also remove the study plan by clicking on the ‘X’ in the right side of this entry.
Please note that you can only remove study plans like this when you have assigned study plans individually to students.
If you want to remove a study plan that has been assigned to a whole class group, you need to use the context menu option ‘Assign Study Plan’ in the right hand side of the class table:
From the ‘Assign Study Plan’ dialog box, you can remove an assigned study plan by clicking the red ‘x’ button next to it, and confirming:
By clicking the ‘View Details’ link in the top right corner of of the Progress panel in the class overview page, you can view a detailed breakdown of the student progress in a Study Plan:
Students that have been assigned a study plan will see it in their dashboard when they log in:
The study plan tile shows a calendar view of the learning activities, and boxes for learning activities that are assigned for the current time period, and what is up next.
Students can also expand the Study Plans tile to see the agenda view by clicking the double down arrow button at the bottom of the tile:
Assigned study plans will also show for students in their ‘My Learning’ page (https://pathfinder.w3schools.com/learningpaths):
